Re: A look at D personnel post by Merlin...

I disagree on a few of his assessments.

Suh is still a 7 IMO. He may be less effective as a NT but he seems to be handling double teams well which I believe is a reason that Donald's numbers are dramatically up.

Brockers is none factor this year. I'd barely give him a 5 but he's definitely not a 6, this year. I'm wondering if they would be better served with moving him back to the nose full time and letting Suh play DE.

Littleton is a 7. I think he's had more than his moments. He's consistently shown up as a play-maker. Prior to Fowler he's the only LB that has shown up.

Barron is a 4 like he rated but for different reasons. Wade loved how Barron performed last year, gave him rave reviews, and Wade obviously was instrumental in keeping him around despite the huge salary so I don't think the issue is lack of scheme fit. If that was it, Wade wouldn't have been so impressed after seeing him play in the scheme in year 1.

I don't think Barron is healthy. He's not the same guy he was last year.

I largely agree with his CB assessment. Talib returning will fix all of the problems with that group. Right now with Talib's absence, they're asking Peters to do things that don't fit his game. Talib was supposed to be the press corner, Peters they were gonna allow to play his instinctual, off coverage on the #2 WR and let him do his thing as a play maker. With Talib gone, he not only now is matched up against the #1 WR but he's now forced to play a style of coverage that he doesn't excel at, never has. Snead, McVay, and Wade are too good at what they do to not know this which is why I don't think the long term plan was ever for him to play press coverage.

When Talib returns, Peters goes back to a 7 rating.

I totally disagree on the Johnson assessment. He appears to me to be playing at a high level. PFF has him ranked as the 13th highest safety which seems about right to me. Joyner OTOH is a total disaster as stated.

As far as the overall point of looking at the personnel, I feel all of the results have to fall on Wade because he signed off on all of this. They switched out the LBs and brought in new CBs at his behest. He chose to keep Barron. Wade has got to step it up.

No shortage of D players having “disappointing” seasons, is there?
