A different management of "forests" is not the problem-sorry

November 11, 2018 08:35AM
There are no forests in Malibu. The most damaging fires in recent years and today have swept through grasslands and brush-not forests. The reasons for the increasing threats of fires in California are complex. As the editorial in the L.A. Times today says in pertinent part: " Climate change is amplifying natural variations in the weather. California has endured long stretches of drought. Coupled with warmer temperatures, the paucity of rainfall had dried out vegetation creating more timber. As the continued burning of fossil fuels adds heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere and exacerbates the effects of climate, the state is going to see more frequent , more destructive wildfires."

For anyone to argue its about Calif's forest management is simply not looking at the actual facts. Los Angeles does not exist in a forest. If anything we live in a desert. In the last few days two fires tore through the coastal hillsides, burning mansions and mobile homes and forcing 200,000 people to flee. Two people died. Malibu was evacuated as the Woolsey fire burned toward the ocean. Zuma Beach became a scene where evacuees fled to the water with horses, dogs and even llamas.
