Les Snead explains how Dante Fowler trade happened, when talks started

The Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars went down to the wire on Tuesday before striking a deal for Dante Fowler Jr. about 30 minutes before the trade deadline. On the surface, it would seem the trade came together fairly quickly.

Sean McVay said Monday that the Rams were looking at pass rushers, though he didn’t mention Fowler’s name or any others, for obvious reasons. This wasn’t the first time the Rams checked in on Fowler, however.

During an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio Wednesday, Les Snead broke down the deal and said the Rams “followed Dante a little bit into August.”

Snead said he felt the Rams “needed some edge [pressure]” before the deadline and “was knocking on their door, talking with Dave Caldwell a good bit.” The Jaguars initially said no, but after losing to the Eagles in London, that answer changed.

“After the London game, got a text from Dave and he says, ‘Maybe we should chat and revisit on Dante,’” Snead said.

The two sides started talking Tuesday morning about compensation, which turned out to be a third-round pick in 2019 and a fifth-rounder in 2020. The third-rounder going to Jacksonville next year will be the higher of the two compensatory picks they’re expected to receive, which made this deal easier to swallow for Snead.

“I can say this: Because we expect to have three third-rounders in this draft based on compensatory picks – no guarantees, but the loss of Sammy Watkins, the loss of Trumaine Johnson – you can project to have at least two, maybe three,” Snead said. “Again, that formula is very complicated, I can’t figure it out. Because we had those multiple threes, we did know that we might be able to have that silver bullet of a third-rounder to get a Dante Fowler.”

The Rams are making the most of the ability to trade compensatory picks, and for good reason. This was a wise move by Snead, one that could propel the Rams to the Super Bowl.
