This is absolutely not any sort of revelation to anyone. You folks all know this.
But we struggle in the RZ. And I believe that a big part of that is very, very seldom running quick slant patterns that are very hard to defend, given the right formation.
And THAT, as we all know very well, has a lot to do with physically unimposing bodies playing WR for us.
Reynolds has forever been held forth as a potential solution--a 6'3" WR who ought to be able to impose himself on the goal line.
OK. So why hasn't it happened? I won't speculate. I'll just note that McV has rarely gone to this sort of thing.
So last week R scores in the R Z on a very short throw. Is that a break through? Might McV begin to trust him there? Damn, I hope so.
To me, an effective RZ offense has to balance the threat of the run with very hard to defend quick throws--slants and fades. We have the run. We haven't had passing routes that can impose themselves off of a 3 step drop. I would dearly love to see that change, and R is our best shot at it. The other WRs need some room to maneuver--hard to find in the RZ.
