I doubt if you can name any NFL QB who has not had 'examples' of those type of passes.. they can all throw 'elite' passes, at times. Throwing a great pass in and of itself is nothing special.
The 'new' is exactly what you said, throwing that many in one game. So yes, he did something 'new'... and it's no small thing. - JamesJM
We're not talking about the same things.
No, the types of passes I am talking about with Goff are not common to all qbs and are in fact part of a skill set he has that is fairly unique. Not a lot of qbs have that particular ability. The super-refined touch on longer passes (over 15 yards). Not a lot of qbs have that. That combined with the quickness of the release and how they fire in. It's a short list of qbs who have that particular surgical art.
So I am talking about "Goff can do THIS thing" kinds of passes and yes he had those all along, even in his worst games in the pros.
So I am saying what I am saying. I am saying that what he did is not new, and that's precisely what I meant. It's not new because it's a skill set that goes back to Cal and was evident there too.
He's just doing more of them per game, probably because he is more seasoned, more confident, more dialed in, thinking less, and more in sync with his receivers.
But I can show you passes like that from the pre-season of 2016, and from Cal, and from his bad games in the 2016 regular season.
All decent to good qbs get to be more seasoned, more confident, more dialed in, thinking less, and more in sync with their receivers. Not a whole lot of them have the particular raw skill I am describing. They might have other strengths but that one is not common. The skill I am talking about is innate and is a "got it or you don't" thing. He always had that particular raw talent.
