Frankly, I find his platitudes grating.
The whole team does it. Listen to any interview and they often bust out the same kind of generalized stuff that mimics McVay a lot. I don't know if they're just following his cue or if he specifically asks them to just be very respectful of opponents and humble about themselves. I suspect it's a combination of modeling and teaching.
While it does make for "boring" interviews and press conferences (you could easily program a McVay press conference bot), I think it's smart. We really never give the other team something to get upset about and make it personal.
