I was just re-thinking my musings in the post above. In it, I pose the question everyone is wondering about: was the BUF game a wake up call or a sign of significant weakness?
The CW (conventional wisdom) is that the Vikings will respond tonight with a roar: intense, focused, angry, and at their best. They blew a trap game, people think, and that can spur a team to resurgence against a team they will respect. That is a very likely result.
But, a thought occurred to me. They blew the GB game the week before. If you live in Minny as I do you know that GB/MN is one of the most intense rivalries in the league. To merely tie GB with a 1-legged Rogers was a major gaffe. And you know GB is really not that good of a team.
So, it occurs to me that the resurgence 1 would expect from an elite team that blew a game should have happened last week! They SHOULD have been all over BUF. Had they beaten GB, the BUF game would be a real trap game sandwiched between 2 serious opponents. But they followed the blown GB game with a complete collapse against a bad team. Where was the renewed intensity that week?
I am not at all willing to assert this as fact. But I think the BUF game
could be more of an exposure of a team's weakness than a trap game anomaly. If they could follow the GB game strong, why should we assume that they will follow last week's catastrophe with a return to excellence?
It's a real possibility. But, it is also a possibility that the VIKES will wake up for tonight. What the heck do I know?
