The problem lies in thinking it's those big televised hits that are killing guys and it's not, the killer is the hundreds of smaller impacts their brains are taking each and every week. Over and over. We see flags for helmet to helmet against a receiver (or quarterback) more and more, when is the last time you saw it called against a FB going up the middle that meets a LB or DL?
At some point, if we're really concerned with the health of players, someone is going to need to take the helmets out of the equation. I know for me, that helmet made me far more comfortable using my head as a battering ram. Not necessarily as a weapon but as a great leverage tool. And I did so all through college.
If I wasn't wearing that solid and snug brain box, I wouldn't have been nearly as comfortable smashing my forehead and face against things.
