I would say this...if you have a TE in FFB playing the Rams, start him! We knew that area was a weakness.
I did find it interesting how Gruden stay with quick short passes all night. He knew deep routes would cause issues behind the LOS and in deep coverage.
What you say is true. And of course it is standard practice against a top DL to try to get the ball out really quickly. That's pretty predictable.
However, if that's really all you've got, if you really don't dare throwing downfield, well, it's gonna be a long night. Good NFL defenses do very well against Offenses limited to throwing underneath. And when they COMBINE top shelf DLs with superb secondaries … well, good luck.
Keep in mind, too, that the OAK OL is top shelf. And that Lynch will grind out more yards than the vast majority of league RBs. Taken all in all, I am pretty pleased. You know, I was disgusted at half time. This would-be top D looked pretty vulnerable. But looking back, we did pretty well. We missed chances to get off the field, but the only stat that looked really bad was TOP.
I think when OCs look at film and see our DBs' performance, they are going to have major headaches.
