No logical reason for #raiders to make this “football” move. No salary cap reason either. This has to be a cash issue.
Here's what a lot of people aren't seeing yet about the Donald deal. He took a bit less than the metrics say he was worth on the annual avg. amount (22.5 M). He conceded a little on the length (6 years). But he absolutely scored on the bonus (huge) and guaranteed money (a lot). So it looks like he traded annual amount and years for the bonus and the guaranteed money.
Well here's the thing about that. Both things depend on the team having cash in hand. According to the rules a team cannot offer guaranteed money without setting aside real cash in advance. And bonuses may be divided up across the years for cap hits but the team pays it all at once in real cash.
So the Donald deal means that Kroenke fronted a huge amount of cash. He basically bought a trade off so AD could compromise on the annual avg. amount and therefore the cap hit, and on the years.
And.
Oakland does not have cash like that.
They cannot compete with a signing bonus and guaranteed money to put Mack in the same contract boat as Donald.
That's not the only reason for this trade but it is part of it I bet.
