Crenshaw High didn't exist when I went to Dorsey. If it had I would have gone there instead based on where I lived. As you likely know Dorsey and to some extent Crenshaw today is -or was-like a farm system funneling athletes-especially football-to USC. I played with Don Baylor who went to Dorsey on a football scholarship
but ended up playing baseball there-after Rod Dedeaux got hold of him-and went on to play against the Dodger, in the WS, as the starting left fielder for Baltimore. If you look up NFL players who played at Dorsey-the list seems endless. Also black entertainers, politicians, etc.
In the mid 50s -if you were an athlete-especially football-it was a great time to grow up in the inner city. Today the best end up in the Catholic high schools.
BTW: a close friend of mine graduated from Dorsey and went to USC where he graduated with a degree in architecture. Their school of architecture is one of the best in the nation.
