Unfortunately it took several years for Ellard's career to really take off. He was the best punt returner in the league over his first three seasons (13.5 yards/return, 4 TDs), but as a WR it wasn't until year 6 (1988) that he took off. No fault of his given some of the QBs he played with early on...
His prime (1988-1996) is very, very good. And in that 9-year stretch he was 6th in the league in receptions, 2nd in yards (behind Jerry Rice), 1st in yards/reception and 14th in TD catches. The relatively low TDs total and moderate playoff success probably hurts him.
I'm not sure where he was on the all-time receptions and yards list when he retired but I think it was top 6 or so for each.
