The Rams have already made it clear what category Donald belongs to. It's top defender in the league. If you listed the top 25 defensive players, while you would have a lot of good ones, you would only have at best 3-4 who were in Donald's class as a player.
So you pay him in line with the guys who qualified as that before.
Anyway top defenders in the league include Watt (contract 2014), Von Miller (contract 2016), and Mack and Donald.
Why so few? Just focusing on DTs and taking a broad perspective, good qbs are more common, both today and all throughout all NFL history, than elite DTs.
Anyway everything the Rams have said about this indicate that they are paying him as a rare top defensive player. Not among the top, not among the top 10 let alone 20, it's top, period.
Mack is of course making the same kind of claim.
