Read that story earlier today. Gives interesting insight into where the agents for Mack and Donald are looking for money wise.

Also didn't know that AD failed to come in to get that third year. Also big difference between 20 and 23.5 million. Rams will be hard pressed

to keep every star player. But if they end up with AD,Cooks,Peters, JG, and Gurley then it will be all about drafting well to keep the talent

level up going forward.

A good cap analysis that made the rounds is that winning teams have about 10 guys taking up 60% of the cap. With both AD and Goff, you can expect more than 50 M. If as expected the 2020 cap is 200 M, then, 60% of that is 120 M. That leaves room for I think 5-6 other guys. It's not 10 guys but then IMO Donald is worth 2 other guys not of his caliber as players. So let's say AT LEAST AD, Goff, Cooks, Peters...and...3-4 other guys.

One thing that article is not right about is that when guys from other positions are up for 2nd contracts, the avg. amount per goes up every year for them, too. Just not as high as qbs are getting in that year but it does go up. Right now, for Donald, the trend setting contract is Suh's 2015 deal for 19 M a year. And that's just looking at DTs---if you pay Donald as one of the best DEFENDERS in the league, then you have Von Miller's 2016 deal for 19 M a year. In 2018 Donald ought to be getting more than that and not just 20 M. 23 M sounds right.

And it's not qb money either. In 2018 qb money for 2nd contracts for starters is around 28 M. That's what Cousins and the SF JG got. Next year it will be more.

.,,.,.,.

Well, let’s take a look at that.

Let’s assume that your 2020 cap number of $200 million is correct.

Goff $30 million
AD $23 million
Cooks $16 million
Peters $18 million

Those 4 players put us at $87 million already. The next 4-6 players will surely exceed your remaining $33 million in order to remain at $120 million or 60% of overall cap that “winning teams” spend on their top 10 players.

And, even if they could somehow do that impossible looking feat, then we still have a problem. We need to somehow fit 43 more players in for a combined $80 million. That’s less than $2 million per player.

And at least 12 of them must be starters in addition to our 10 included above PLUS Hekker, GZ, and McQuaide.

Like I’ve said before, the cap is like a big pizza. The bigger the slice going to one player means a correspondingly smaller slice for other players. It’s a zero sum thing.

Look, I get that top players are gonna get top salaries. That’s the free market at work. But I also see why the Rams are trying to hold down the top salaries in order to have money for other needed players.

I am a fan of the team and consequently want what’s best overall for the team. It’s ultimately like a family budget problem. Should they get the Ferrari when both mom and dad need a car to get to work?

Just saying that there will be some excruciating personnel decisions coming up in these next few years.
