Lots of people are on the bubble

May 01, 2018 08:41AM
I find it curious how we can even begin to figure out who makes the roster.

Our roster of reserves is so young that there may be great improvement of some guys that are considered to be on the bubble.

I think that every player that is not a starter is probably considered on the bubble.

QB looks pretty predictable only question is do we carry 2 or 3 QB.
RB: Do we carry 3 or 4? Davis, Brown and Kelly fight it out for 2 spots unless we carry 4
WR: If we carry 6 it seems pretty cut and dry
TE: top 3 seem pretty well set. Do we carry 4: Mundt, Rogers
OL: Whit, Have, Saffold, Brown, Sullivan are locks. Blythe, Noteboom and probably Allen. That is 8. Do we keep 1 or 2 more? Williams, Demby would seem to be favorites. Demby has more positional flexibility.

DL: Donald, Brockers, Suh, are locks. Westbrooks/Easley close to locks. That's 5 do we keep 7? Battle between Fox, Smart, Joseph, Franklin-Meyers and Lawler.
LB: Locks: Barron, Kiser, Littleton, Ebukam, Longcare, OO & Wilson. That is 7 do we keep 1 more? Battle between Hager, Tompson, Price, Young, Scales. Now if everyone look great do they trade Barron to open up cap room?
CB: Locks Peters, Talib, NRC, Hill, Shields. That is 5 do we carry 6? Battle between Hatfield, Countess and Peterson.
S: Locks: Joyner, Johnson strong starters but open competition behind starters. Do we carry 4 or 5? Battle Christian, Howard, Johnson, Parker. Howard may have an advantage if he can also play ILB. Christian & Johnson can play some CB
Special Teams: All locked up.

Other than the starters it seems like most of the jobs are up for grabs. Seems Defensive backfield will have a lot of competition for reserve roles and positional flexibility may play a key role in determining who gets the backup spots. Same can be said to some degree at LB and OL and maybe DL. RB/TE/QB look pretty fixed with RB have a 3 way battle for possibly only 2 open spots. Defense seems like it will have some surprises but the young guys are going to have to knock off the more experience reserves. OL seems to point to young reserves over the young vets but you never know. On defense, especially LB/DB if someone stands out on special teams they will have a big advantage in gaining a spot.

Of course injuries will help clarify things and we should expect at least 2-4 players on IR which opens up some spots.

Overall Roster seems really solid with lots of talent fighting for the reserve roles. No reason we don't get a first round bye.
