Mayfield is the best of the QBs --- Darnold, Allen or Rosen.
I listen to NFL Radio and I think more coaches, ex-players and others were saying Mayfield is the best. But, until Tuesday night, most were saying they would take Darnold. The Browns made this decision over a month ago. It's just that they kept it under wraps. Hue Jackson didn't know until, I believe, Wednesday.
Everyone I hear also says that none of the QBs were the top player in this draft...that has been unanimous for Barkley.
I think the Browns did the right thing and got their QB...and in my opinion, they picked the right QB...one of the most efficient QBs in college football history, the most accurate, the one QB of the bunch that came up big and won big games, smart, mobile and a leader. I think Mayfield will be the type of player you love only if he is on your team. And, discussions were that the Jets were likely going to take Mayfield at 3. Mayfield would have never gotten past 6. Mayfield is hands down the most accomplished QB of this draft. And comparisons to Johnny Manziel are, to me, out of place.
As for the Ward pick, that was the real head scratcher. Why not trade down? The only thing I can think of is that they couldn't find a trade partner. Once they took the QB first, teams realized they could likely wait until the Denver pick or later to move up.
The Browns for years needed a QB. They did the right thing and picked the one they thought was best...and did so immediately. I cannot fault them for that.
Now, the Browns are loaded for rounds 2 and 3.
