If they did sign Suh, and assume they draft an edge rusher fairly early in the draft, how good do you think the D would be?
How many rookie pass rushers (DEs or edge/OLBs) get much in the way of sacks as rookies?
Of the 35 defenders last year who had 8 or more sacks, only one was a rookie.
...
Yeah, good question. I don't know. That's partially why I'm asking the question to see what others think.
On the one hand, I don't typically expect much from a rookie so my answer would be only a few sacks. Say 2-4 range.
On the other hand, if they add Suh to make a dominant DL to go with their dominant secondary, whoever that lucky rookie is will have a lot of free passes to the QB.
And that was already the case last year IMO. For much of the year, our edge rushers weren't generating a lot of pressure or sacks on their own. Longacre is ok but he mostly did clean up duty. I think a rookie can do that just as easily, possibly better.
As we've discussed, Quinn was really good towards the end of the year but what he was providing for the first 11 weeks is not hard to replace.
Ultimately, I think if they add Suh and an edge rusher. the D
should - no guarantee - become dominant.
