S&M would like to enter the draft with the fewest possible “holes”. In this way they would be free to take BPA at the all important top of the draft. That means that they will be fairly active in FA once it officially starts.
I see 5 of these “holes” currently.
NT
OLB (2)
ILB
WR (depending on Watkins)
So, I see an effort to plug in 2nd tier FA in as many of these positions as possible. Good fits, mind you, more than household name types. Probably 3 of them, but it might be all 5. Not sure how Wade really feels about the holdovers at these positions but the actions of the next few months will tell the real story. One thing is kinda obvious this offseason. Wade wants good fits and upgrades at every position possible and S&M are moving mountains to see that he gets what he wants.
I see signings of current FA’s including NRC, Sully, and Longacre. Might be a handful more. The above signings plus extensions are doable, I believe. I know that some doubt that the cap could accommodate all these moves, but I think it can. I’ve never seen a group that could work a FA period like this one.
I don’t consider AD a must sign. When he’s ready, then they will extend him. There are ways to create the needed space when that time comes, but until that day arrives they will focus on upgrading this roster in the McVay/Wade image. Very smart, IMO.
I firmly believe that the Rams emerge from FA and the draft with an elite D. One that will keep opposing OC’s and QB’s up at night before playing us.
Combine that with our O and ST and you have the makings of a SB contending team.
Gonna be fun to watch all this unfold.
