I've heard this same sort of sentiment expressed over and over on the sports news. They aren't demeaning Watkins at all, but he's not a game changer. This is NOT Julio Jones. Heck, he's not Alshon Jeffrey. He's good. But a 6'1" guy with speed and pretty good hands can be had any number of ways.
But a guy that is as good as Joyner, gives it all every play, changes games; and can play multiple positions to boot. You just don't find guys like this. They don't grow on trees.
So when it comes to push and shove, given no other choice but to Tag one or the other, the easy choice was Joyner. Even the nearly $5mil money differential made sense. Nothing against Watkins. He just doesn't present the value that Joyner presents.
