I believe that the same can be said for Tavon Austin; otherwise why would they keep him with that high salary. In fact I think he helped open up other players even more when he was on the bench. He must be that good because he has a big contract.
In all seriousness I get the feeling the Rams want both Joyner and Watkins to comeback and whatever they gave up to get Watkins originally is now irrelevant. Staying with someone who does not produce or fit because you gave up a pick is rediculous. It leads to large contracts to #1 picks who don’t produce. If they don’t value him that much and can get value by franchising and trading they will. Watkins has already had a ‘show me’ year and his production was only so so for a “true number 1”. Having said that it looks to me that McVay’s offense is based on a phylosophy of streaching the defense by spreading the ball around. They want all the threats they can get. What i see is if they get a contract with Joyner then they tag Watkins and give him another year. The extra cost on the franchise tag is worth not being locked into a long term deal with him at over 11million per year. If only TA had gotten the tag before the big contract.
Love the debate on these issues, way better than the off season over the last 8 years I’ve been a member here!
