I have a friend who is an editor. She mostly does free lance work now. The only organizations from which she can get repeat business are universities and professional or scientific organizations.

She also told me yesterday that the printed word is becoming more "fluid" and that the standards of grammar and punctuation are becoming increasingly degenerate.

She said a lot of what she edits, if it's not from an academic or scientific source, is no better than a text message, and that readers today find punctuation "off-putting."
