What is a "Gorn"? You are very out of the loop, WV... and a traitor because any true American... wait, any decent human on earth, saw the Star Trek episode "Arena" in which Capt. Kirk took on, in one on one combat, a "Gorn". You should have known that... and thus had your answer.
The answer, however, would have been wrong. I came by the nickname Gorn before that episode aired, actually. Intrigued, aren't you?
I was asked that so many times I came up with a stock answer - - "It's origin was born in a haze of sweet smelling 60's smoke".
I will now provide a bit more info: I believe my christening came about in '67, but it did not begin with "Gorn". In '66 I began growing my hair long.. first one around here to do. By '67 it was shoulder length. So I was given the nickname "Head"... (not very good, eh? But this was '67, not quite the same connotation then).
"Head" evolved into "Headrick"... which further evolved into "Von Headrick". Then, as often happens in evolution, evolution took a sudden leap and "Von Headrick" become Zephlyr which soon became "Von Zeflyr"'. It was short-lived, however.
"Von Zeflyr" again evolved in a sea to land burst and became "Gornick"... which it remains to this day. "Gorn" is just the short version.
I still get asked that question because, I have a few friends who still call me Gornick, or Gorn.... and when they do, if we're around other people, those people want to know. It has not had a rebirth, however, no one from today has picked up on it.... so the only people who call me Gornick, or Gorn, are those friends from my distant sweet cloudy filled past.
Kind of a romantic tale, don't you agree? - JamesJM
