McVay continued to make the same mistake he has during the year. He was Fisher like in his play calling. It was vanilla.
One thing he did that I didn't understand...
He ran tight/bunch formations except when they got in third and long. He then ran Gurley up the middle/inside the tackles. Why do you run formations that pull all the defenders inside and then run inside? Was he hoping to bust one?
When he ran Gurley wide in spread formations, we had success. Why Gurley dropped all those passes, who knows. But it exposed our need to get the ball downfield via the air and not continually rely on Gurley screen passes.
As for Watkins drop...let's call it a drop...not a Cooper Kupp-like drop but ok..a drop on an underthrown ball where the corner was on him and he had to adjust. But it hit his hands so...
The team was not close to being ready. I found myself saying "Ficken" McVay instead of "ficken" Ficken!
