The Rams offered to make him the highest paid defensive player. And pay him more money than they would have to if they kept to his original contract and just franchised him for two years. He turned that down.
He held out for an opt-out clause, which the Rams are probably not going to agree to for another 3 years.
Then he missed the first game and returned at his current contract. At the end of the season he said in an interview that he attributes his feeling so good at the end of the season to holding out. Holding out didn't hurt him publicity-wise, he still made all-pro and may be the Defensive POY.
Hard for me to imagine that next summer will be any different.
