Foles and Keenum and Goff

Interesting, the top 3 seeds in the NFC are all QBs that played poorly under Fisher, but are now the QBs of the top teams in the conference!!!

This isn't necessarily a slam just in Fisher although that is a little side element, but the understanding that QBs that have a good coach and some playmakers have the world by the tail as it makes all the difference in the world. The current Rams management finally saying enough is enough, went out and got some threats and took care of the Greg Robinson situation and all of a sudden everything changes. Coaching obviously matters as well as the running game improved because now there is space for Gurley to run and use his talent.

I hope the Rams win and we have all 3 in the final four. Foles, Keenum, Goff.

The change in Goff from this year to last year is undeniable and it comes from 1) Coaching 2) Better WRs 3) Replacing Greg Robinson

Many years later and "The Greatest Show on Turf still is misunderstood that Bruce, Holt, Hakim, Proehl made such a big difference. Replace those guys with regular guys and replace Mike Martz with some regular conservative coach trying to figure out if there was enough runs and you have a regular result on offense. I contend that Bruce and Holt were very underappreciated to this day as we have seen in the Hall of Fame voting.

But, it's interesting about the qbs.

I always liked Keenum btw, and posted stuff supporting him. I also said that when it gets down to just him, and he has to carry a team for a game, he can falter---I don;t think he's built of starting caliber stuff that way. That would be him without a defense consistently dominating the game, and without a running game. When that happens, what you can end up with, unless the defense wins the game, is something like the 2016 Detroit game, where he kept the offense going simply by passing but then threw a game-killing INT. You see that in the Vikings/Panthers game this year, where they had huge OL injury issues and CK gets sacked 6 times and throws 2 INTs, and the running game didn't really get going (the Vikes running game is usually better--they're 2nd in rushing attempts and 7th in rushing yards in spite of being 23rd in yards per carry, a combination of numbers which goes to show you how they usually manage Keenum, which is to run a lot in spite of the YPC).

Foles is just not looking like a good qb. That's even in a situation where the OL is solid, the defense is top notch, and they have a running game (6th in attempts, 3rd in yards). Last 2 games he was 23 of 49 for 202 yards and 1 TD but 2 INTs. Even if they make it through the playoffs with Foles, which I doubt, they don't stand a chance with him at qb in a superbowl.

Goff last year was a green qb coming from an Air Raid system, and most qbs from that system enter the league less prepared for pro offenses than most. Most Air Raid qbs are busts---and this goes back a couple of decades. And by "most" I mean all but 2 so far (and it's actually just Goff and Keenum). Even though they are the royal exceptions, neither Goff nor Keenum started out well in their first year (or 2, in Keenum's case). In 2016 with Goff, that's on top of having no running game, and a defense which, by the time he started, was faltering or at least had become very inconsistent. I don't think that's a good combination for a rookie qb, let alone a rookie qb from an Air Raid system. I also don;t think that Boras was prepared to be in that situation--leading an offense on a team that had moved and couldn't run the ball and had a rookie qb etc.

At the same time, of course, not only did McVay benefit from getting a qb who was no longer a rookie and had already worked through the usual rookie qb issues, but also (of course) Goff benefited from McVay's offensive expertise. It was a good marriage at the right time. As Rams fans we're lucky that way. The Rams got their coach and the coach did not have a true rebuild situation, he inherited a lot of talent, including Goff.

As usual with discussing things like this, it seldom if ever gets down to one thing.
