Any new head coach of a team will consider it EXTREMELY important to start over with assistant coaches. They need to remove the "old-losing" culture and replace with the the "new-winning" culture. Even small traces of former regimes can potentially infest and stagnate the progress of a new coaching regime. So 99% of the time you see new coaches fire all the former assistant coaches. Some of these assistant coaches are probably considered as "valuable".....but changing the culture is more important. As great is Fassell Jr. is.....it was a risk for McVay to have him stay. Frankly, McVay has hit home runs across the board on the assistant coaching list.....and he shows great humility in making sure his staff gets a ton of credit for their productivity.
