Yes this guy self scouts but he is also brilliant. No bones about it this young coach is not your average guy.
He gets it both the internal and external communication. He gets the whole enchillada.
He is going to do what ever it was he was planning on doing becuase this 9-4 record was not a surprise to him as it has fallen according to his goals for this team.
#1 Goal - Bring Jared Goff around and up to the level of play that has him playing at top 10 level an unheard of goal for a QB coming from where Jared started and a very young QB at that.
#2 Re-energize Tod Gurley who by the end of last year did more running for cover than he did running into the heart of the defense. Got Gurley to trust his blockers & Play harder on limited snaps in the backfield. He also encouraged and sold him on his value as reciever in the open field.
#3 McVay sold them on the system and his philosophy and they have bought in. He created competition throughout the offense starting with OL then TE and WR. No one quits and they all stick to the plan.
He set unthinkable goals for a team that was pretty much unwatchable an they believed because he told them what he was going to do and how to help them reach them.
He set an unthinkable goal of: Win each qtr of the season. You think but who doesn't? Well most set goals but don't have a plan to reach them. This is a highly motivated and driven HC. "If you are not getting better you are getting worse. Remember this was a 4-12 team.
Even in our losses I see us getting better each week. That was the ongoing focus and the weekly goal. Lot of details in between were outlined and addressed.
Each week offensively we have made corrections and gotten better or demonstrated an ability to improve on a weakness exposed the prior week. Injuries can impact that as well but he has managed to show that he can press forward.
Stay healthy well that takes fortune but he has managed to keep players as fresh as possible and BTW it is now Gurley time.
That is not an apology from McVay nor is it a regret it is right on time and part of the plan that he gets and this team is getting and pretty soon we will all recognize that the weekly falling on the sword and the taking ownership is part of a culture of accountability that has taken over this franchise and turned us from losers to winners and now believers.
It is something great coaches do and it just so happens that this one does it in a refreshing way. I am not buying into this as anything but our coaches speak for "I got this... because I get it!"
Now, so do I.
