Rams do not usually use future cap. Like Whitworth. If he didn't work out the Rams could have cut him next year already. Same with Wood. They pay it up front. If you look at Ogletree's deal he is heavily guaranteed in 2018, a little bit in the next year, then they can cut him with minimal damage. Barron was structured the same way.

They don't usually backload but they use the 2nd year, especially with their own young free agents up for their 2nd contract.

Look at Quinn's extension. In 2014 he signed an extension. The 2014 cap hit was 3 M and the 2015 cap hit was 16.7+ M, which was by far the biggest year in the deal (the rest from 2016-2019 averaged around 11 M a year).

Same with Austin. He signed an extension in 2016 and the cap hit that year was 7+ M. The cap hit in 2017 was nearly 15 M and that was the largest year in the deal.

So again the Rams have done this. The year AFTER the contract year becomes the biggest hit, which means they are using future cap space---but just one year into the future. But they do not generally backload, which is a different thing.

So signing Donald in 2018, they can park his biggest hit in 2019. Donald would have an incentive if they guaranteed the 2019 portion.

That means they can use 2019 cap space to pull off a 2018 contract.

And actually in 2018 they have 53+ M before doing anything about Quinn (and doing Quinn would make it more like 65.5 M).
