My neighbor just drove down from near where you live (i.e. Paso Robles). He came down 101 but near Ventura he took Highway 1-which is a beautiful drive through Malibu, etc. That takes you to the Santa Monica freeway which takes you right to downtown. That avoids the 101 going through the valley where many of the fires are. But if you take that route I would leave even earlier since its a weekend and your going through beach towns. OTOH by staying on the 101 I think you would be fine since all freeways appear open. Your choice.
You might want to check with CHP if any closures on the 101-especially in the La Conchita area. And don't rely on the app. WAZE.
