Wanted to add some input to this thread regarding the Seattle Offense and Russell Wilson. A little background, I am currently building a new way of reporting on NFL stats--a dynamic to the user system. So, I am going through games and logging data on each play. This is very time consuming but I just finished the Seattle Philly game.
Russell is a simply excellent quarterback in all areas of the game. In the Philly game he has several 'bailout' plays where he ran for his life. However, the Seattle offense lives off of several pass concepts--
1. Pick plays--quick, timed throws in the 5-10 yard range where a wr will trail and break either in or out. Russell's timing and accuracy on this throws is superb. For contrast, Wentz was terrible with his accuracy in this game. At least three times Wentz had a wr open for a big play and hit the wr so inaccurately he caused the wr to fall to the ground to catch the ball. Tremendous difference in this game between the two QBs. I am not juding Wentz, just commenting on what I saw in one game,
2. Deep throws--Seattle throws a high number of deep passes relative to the rest of the league. Again, Russell's accuracy is excellent here.
3. Matchups--Seattle plays alot of no back trying to isolate JD McKissic on a lb. They did this excellently in the 4th quarter of the Eagles game.
The Seattle offense is well coached in my opinion. They put their players in a good position to succeed while making it difficult for the defense to matchup properly.
Calling the Seattle offense a make-it-up-as-you-go offense is taking them lightly and simply incorrect.
In most ways, Wilson is better than Michael Vick, and he can read defenses. But, I don't think his reliance on running is sustainable. As he slows down, he will need to rely more on his passing skills. It's why Tom Brady is still playing well at 40.
