We got good overnight. We could get bad overnight, as well.
Just one small example: how different would some of this year's outcomes be without Aaron Donald? What if he isn't here next year for some reason? Or if you're not convinced on Donald, plug in your own favorite player nearing the end of their contract.
Especially in the era of free agency, every year is different. Look how quickly we went from unstoppable in 1999 to freefall toward the basement. Let's say we finish out 12-4 this year. Depending on what happens in the off-season, or injuries, or whatever, it is completely feasible that we go back to 7-9 next year.
My point is: any talk about the future is just so uncertain. The time to win is this week. Then the next week. Then the next week. Until you hoist that Lombardi over your head with the confetti coming down around you. Next year might as well be next decade.
I dunno, some ball clubs seem to be able to field a competitive team year in and year out. Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New England (
) come to mind immediately. Until/unless someday the Rams show that kind of consistency, "next year" will always be kind of irrelevant to me. Just my personal opinion.
