football is not a Markov process

The future of a Markov process depends only on its present state. Many fans seem to think that the success of a football team is a Markov process. In other words, it only depends on what happened last week. This works both ways. After a big win, the sky is the limit. After a loss, the team is doomed. In a way I'm surprised, but in terms of the Markov process thinking, I'm not surprised at how many Rams fans have reacted to the loss to the Vikings. Ready to concede that the Vikings, Eagles, and Saints are better than the Rams. I don't see it that way. If not for a few critical mistakes, the Rams would have taken control of that game early. There is no way of telling how any game will turn out. Football is unpredictable on any given Sunday, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rams blow out the Saints.
