Interesting Tie-breaker Scenario for Division

November 21, 2017 08:50AM
I was looking at our chances of winning the division and came across something interesting.

Our remaining schedule:
NO,ARI,PHI,SEA,TEN,SF
Seattle's remaining schedule:
SF,PHI,JAX,LAR,DAL,ARI

If the season finishes as the following:
LAR->NO(L),ARI(W),PHI(L),SEA(W),TEN(L),SF(W) record:10-6
SEA->SF(W),PHI(L),JAX (W),LAR(L),DAL(W),SF(W) record:10-6

The first tie breaker is head to head which Rams, Hawks split 1-1.
The second tie breaker is in division which is also a tie 5-1 each.
The third tie breaker is win percentage against common opponents which actually again would be a tie, same record against common opponents 10-4.
The fourth tie breaker is in conference record which again would be a tie at 7-5.
The fifth tie breaker is "strength of victory," which is "the composite win percentage of the opponents a team has beaten over the course of the regular season." I.e. You add up the records of all the teams each team has beaten and whoever has the better record wins the division. However, in the above scenario the Rams and Seahawks will have only beaten the same teams, and each other, so this again would be a tie.
The 6th tie breaker is "strength of schedule," basically the same thing as step 5 but for every team each team has played. The only teams that we don't have in common with the Seahawks are Minnesota(LAR) , New Orleans(LAR), Green Bay(SEA), and Atlanta(SEA). So as long as by the end of the year the record of MIN+NO > GB+ATL, then the Rams would win the division in this scenario.
Furthermore, the same thing would happen if the Rams and Seahawks both beat the Eagles, though this seems much less likely to happen.
It's also interesting to note that the Rams could likely still win the division is they lose to the Saints, Eagles, and Titans, as long as they beat the Hawks in Seattle.

Edit: trying to remove emoji's haha
