Key to winning this week is Goff, not Gurley

November 18, 2017 04:18PM
The teams the Rams offense has had trouble scoring against are Was., Seattle, and Jax. Looking deeper into the numbers it becomes clearer what types of defenses they struggle against.

The issue against Wash. was actually the defense. The Rams O only had the ball for 23 minutes because the D couldn't stop the run. Their average TOP per game is approx. 31 minutes so scoring fewer points is to be expected.

The games against Seattle and the Jags are more enlightening.

Against Seattle, Goff went 22/47, 288 yards, 6.1 y/a, 2 Sacks, 0 TD, 2 INT, 48.9 Rating
Againt the Jags, Goff went 11/21, 124 yards, 5.9 y/a, 3 Sacks, 1 TD, 0 INT, 86.2 Rating

Against those two teams, Goff's completion percentage was in the 50% range and the yards per attempt were very low. These are the ONLY two games this year where both of those things happened. It appears to me that when Goff struggles the Rams offense is slowed a lot more than when Gurley is held down.

Goff struggling against Seattle and Jax is not surprising. Those two teams not only had overall good defenses but the strength of their D's is passing defense.

Seattle and Jax Passing Stats:

Opp. Passing Yards / Game - Jax (3), Seattle (7) (Note: this was at the time we played them; Seattle has since fallen off due to injuries. Jax is now 1st)
Opp. Yards / Pass Attempt - Jax (1), Seattle (8)
Opp. Completion Percentage - Seattle (3), Jax (5)
Opp. Avg. Team Passer Rating - Jax (1), Seattle (5)
Opp. Passing TD Percentage - Jax (2), Seattle (8)
Sack Percentage - Jax (1), Seattle (13)

As seen by these numbers, Jax probably has the best passing defense in the league. Seattle looks to be ranked in the 5-7 range.

Now let's take a look at Minnesota:

Opp. Passing Yards / Game - Minn. (12)
Opp. Yards / Pass Attempt - Minn. (5)
Opp. Completion Percentage - Minn. (17)
Opp. Avg. Team Passer Rating - Minn. (8)
Opp. Passing TD Percentage - Minn. (22)
Sack Percentage - Minn. (14)

They are slightly above average at defending the pass. By these numbers, I'd rank them around 12th.

Their scoring D is number 5 but the reason why is because they may be the best team in the league defending the run.

Conclusion: I'd attack them with multiple receiver sets and a heavy dose of passing. They are not particularly great at pressuring the QB. I don't see them rattling Goff. They don't have a secondary like Seattle and Jax to smother all receivers. I think our offense can put up points against them.
