I am not privy to the play-call on the play, so this is solely my opinion based on what I know of passing schemes and NFL offenses. It is my belief that Watkins ran the wrong route on the play. The route originally did call for Watkins to run a stutter-and-go, but that was if Peterson played off coverage. If Peterson pressed, my educated (or uneducated) opinion is that Watkins was supposed to convert his route to a fade. This is a pretty typical read that NFL WRs (and college WRs) are asked to make.
I caught the post-game show on the radio and co-host Kirk Morrison believes that Sammy screwed up the play as well.
If, in fact, the fade is a "typical read that NFL WRs (and college WRs) are asked to make," then I surmise that Sammy may be suffering from information overload in trying to learn McVay's offense in such a condensed period of time (in comparison to others who were present during OTA's and mini-camp. This overload (IMO) can often lead to a player thinking too much instead of "playing" - something that I saw a lot of out of GRob.
I really hope that McVay, Watkins, Goff, Woods, and Kupp can carve out a bit of time over the bye streamline some things for Sammy so that he can become a more productive player for us.
I think that he's close, but he needs a little help.
