Re: Clearly McVay was trying to give Goff no more than he could handle

McVay is in the process of developing a 22 year old QB, that is for all practical purposes a rookie.

To me, McVay is trying to put Goff in situations he can handle. The Jags have one of the best pass D's in the league with perhaps the best secondary. So Goff is not asked to pass very much and rather to simply protect the ball.

THIS is how you develop a QB. Slowly, carefully, building his confidence.

Next week will be a different story. They will need to be more balanced against the Cards with more passing than against the Jags. But even then McVay will protect Goff as much as possible on his development journey.

If things continue to go well, by years end we'll see an even better Goff. Next year, likely the training wheels come off.
Said this after the Dallas game. Since Goff is still so inexperienced that the Rams would be a lot better off continuing to limit his pass attempts. He still has a ways to go in terms of decision making and had been lucky to not turn it over in the earlier games even though the team was scoring so much. Then his attempts ballooned to 47 against the Seahawks and the Rams struggled to score. Now, they ratchet him way back down and the Rams win.

It isn't all because of Goff but I think it's a pretty important part. Even with all of the new success on offense, his individual numbers aren't looking too good. 3 weeks in a row now his completion % has been below 60% and barely over 50%. His YPA has also been declining and less than 7.0 ypa the last two weeks. His deep ball accuracy hasn't seemed very good either.

They are doing everything they can to insulate him which in some ways is good for the team. If they know they have to play better and then do it, it's a good thing. But I continue to worry about Goff when the game is in his hands and he has to consistently make good decisions and good throws.

I think this is because McVay knows he is still tasked to win games
