Of course Shanny is going to have a very good offense down the road. Last night, well lets factor in a couple things.
1. Rams are clearly struggling with Wade Phillips 3-4. They have not bought into it yet and have assignment issues which is causing them problems
in gap assignment and pass coverage. This was somewhat evident in the Skins game and they did not have time to really address it in 4 days or less before playing a much more wide open scheme with Shanahan.
2. Hoyer can play good in spots and last night he did. But keep in mind that against defenses that do not face the problems the Rams defense is facing right now the great Shanahan / Hoyer offense had not scored a TD in 2 games.
It will be interesting to see this same match up down the road later this year. My guess is the Rams defense is playing better by then (they better be or Wade will have a one year stay in LA) and that Shanny's offense will be more together as well.
3. Hoyer has had good runs (see his time with Browns) and then has disappeared. (See Texans)
Garcon is a wonderful receiver and Hyde a great back. And the 49ers defense is new just like the Rams.
I would not assume the 49ers are going to be a juggernaut anytime soon.
Grits
I hope that's not true not matter how the defense performs. Wade's earned the presumption that the problem w/the D isn't HIM. If the D continues to fall on its face it'll because he doesn't have the personnel fit. Worst case, I give Wade another offseason to get a few more pieces to his liking for his D and for the current personnel to get accustomed to what's required of them.
But my guess is that barring a ton of injuries we'll see a decidedly better product going forward on D. I love the fact that they have 10 days and a 3-game body of evidence to figure some stuff out.
