I wonder if what he says about the limited use of Austin is true or if it just coach speak. He also says he plans to get him more involved and genuinely sounds excited about him. I think the general "disappointment" in Austin, by the fans, is so strong it makes me question whether McVay is being 100 percent truthful. I mean teams still have to prepare for Tavon, so it makes sense to say he is in the plans whether he really is or not. I guess its something we will find out.
Not me. What he says makes perfect sense and it's what I expected. They have already used Tavon as a decoy on a play that worked brilliantly (screen to Gurley) in part because using Tavon as a decoy worked. And that DOESN'T work unless defenses respect it. The "disappointment" some feel about TA has always just been water off a duck's back to me. It's clear that someone like McVay gets that using Tavon in his 2015 role is a very good idea and can lead to good things. I mean we credit him with being a smart offensive coach, so, naturally, he's going to see that about Tavon. BTW it's not coachspeak when you go on at length that way.
The people who are disappointed in TA, it seems to me, are the ones measuring him as a pure receiver. He's not that though. And I think we're seeing that McVay sees what he is (combined yards guy, run and pass) and has every intention of using him that way.
