In no particular order these are my observations of Gurley and the Rams running issues.
l
1. Gurley is hit in the backfield too frequently, although I expect that to occur less frequently.
2. Gurley seems slow to the whole. Is it vision, is it trepidation becasue of being hit in the backfield so frequenlty last season?
3. Being a half step slow to the whole increases the likelyhood of being hit in the backfield. Thats on the back. He has incredible acceleration, but not first step, so it sems like it may be hesitation.
4. Backs need to read defenses like QB's and make adjustments on the fly (presnap vision) to find a crease. Faulk like, I don't see Gurley being adept at this.
5. Defenses have crowed the line because of the poor offense of the Rams. McVay calling play action against the Colts created some open receivers and nice gains, as this increases Gurley and the offense will have better opportunities. They crowded the line less after a few successful passes.
6. The team has more taltent on the offense, as it succeed in the passing game, the running game will naturally have more opportunity for success. Defenses won't be able to focus on just taking away the run and crowding the line becasue the team can beat them down the field.
7. I like Davis, he seems quicker to the whole and decisive. He is able to get through the line better than Gurley, he's slippery. He is a good complement, but not a feature back; I'm good with using multiple backs in the running game.
8. I'm waiting to see where this run game developes. Success breeds success. Improvements in all areas of the offense will stretch the defenses. The Colts game was a good first step and Gurley's production against a weak defense was acceptable. Can't wait to see how it goes against the Skins.
9. McVay's attention to the offense and coaching will give Gurley, like Goff a chance to succeed.
