It's about all the excess "rest" that's been given so many starters.
Yeah, I get the desire to start the season with healthy players.
But what about the missed opportunities to develop chemistry and cohesion?
We have so many new players and coaches, not to mention the new O and D schemes. That's a ton of new "stuff" that needed to be incorporated and very quickly.
Check out this list of critical new pieces for this season:
McVay
Wade (yeah, he's a vet. But he's making so many changes with personnel and schemes)
Kromer (do I need to dwell on our right side issues?)
Goff (a virtual rookie in a new system)
Watkins (extremely limited targets for a projected #1)
Brown and Hav (desperately seem to need time to gel together)
Higbee (blocking, hands, and confidence?)
Quinn ( how can he possibly be in football shape without a single snap in a PS game?)
Webster (new teammates, first time starter)
Joyner (new position)
Alexander (new position)
NRC (new teammates, new position)
That's a helluva lot of "new" for one offseason. I love and respect our new coaches, but I can't help wondering if there will be unnecessary sputtering with fits and starts when the season begins. The excessive rustiness might cost us a game or two.
My two biggest concerns are Goff not having enough snaps with his new WR's and TE's and the obvious need for snaps with our starting OL together. There is simply NO substitute for snaps with your starting teammates. Hate to see them having to gel together on the fly when the real bullets are flying.
Again, I understand the reasoning in resting starters as a concept. I'm just wondering if McVay didn't carry it too far.
I can only hope and pray that our coaches are confident after seeing the starters in private practices. Gulp...
