I'm going to draw a parallel between the two,
this is not a claim that Jared Goff is Austin Davis. Not saying that in the least!But there are some similarities between what you saw Saturday night (in a preseason game) and what we saw for a few games with Austin Davis.
Because AD was limited, the OC called plays that he knew AD could handle and gave him easy reads.
Didn't ask him to read the entire field, instead gave him quarters. He made a lot of people think that AD was the second coming.
But I warned posters what would happen when the clock struck midnight for AD.
Defenses figured out what AD did well and started taking it away and we all know what happened from there.
I saw it Saturday night.
McVay did the samething with Goff. He gave Goff simple reads to give him confidence, one read let it go.
Last night McVay was setting up plays beautifully.
You could see how he was setting up plays to make it easier for Goff. Flats, outs, slants, shallow crosses all plays setting up the next.
I pointed it out in the forum before the TD to Kupp, that McVay was setting up over the top.
Although I called it for Sammy, McVay called a misdirection play which allowed Kupp to slip out the back door..
You could see the progression.
I would wager that on 95% of Goff's throws he went to his first read.
Can Goff go off script?
We will soon find out because defenses are gonna make him.
Oakland didn't blitz, ran very vanilla coverages and their coverage players SUCK! They'll have to outscore people.
All things considered I was pleased with Goff's performance but far from convinced.
16-18 under 10 yards should caution you as well.
