The Rams have signed placekicker Travis Coons.
Coons last played in the NFL in 2015 when he appeared in all 16 games for the Cleveland Browns, making 28 of his 32 field goal attempts and all but two of his PAT tries (22-of-24).
The 25-year-old Coons played his college ball at Washington before being signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He was waived prior to the start of the 2014 season before being picked up by the Browns. After a year as the team's starting kicker he was released during the 2016 preseason.
Well that leads me to think they want JZ to have enough leg left after the summer to be able to play this year. They can't be thinking about replacing JZ because cutting him would represent no savings and in fact cost them 0.75 M against the cap.
Or he could be banged up, as you suggest, so they are cutting back his summer reps.
