Glass -blowers are an interesting lot. We had one on campus, but he retired about two years ago. Every time I bumped into him, he would pull me into his lab and show me stuff he'd made. He was retiring early because his position was being eliminated. Apparently, the science department decided it would be easier to by glassware on an as needed basis. Sounds like your friend isn't much of a football fan.
