I agree LT should be a priority next year as well. I think the ideal scenario is Whitworth plays through 2018 and they draft a LT next spring that can be groomed behind him for a year. Maybe that's as a RT, LG or just the OL's 6th man. We'll see. Long way to go but I'd like to see a CB in the 1st round and LT in the 2nd round.
Just adding to the conversation. Since Kromer has been an OL coach (or a coordinator with one foot in OL coaching meaning it's his OL system either way), he has never had a high-picked left OT.
Partly that;s because he puts a lot of emphasis on guard over tackle.
Partly because apparently he knows how to use tackles in his system so he knows what he wants there.
Here;s Kromer's LOTs:
In Oakland from 2002-4, it was Barrett Robbins (2nd round) then Barry Sims (udfa).
In New Orleans from 2008-12, it was Jermon Bushrod (4th round).
In Chicago he brought Bushrod with him.
In Buffalo he inherited Cordy Glenn (2nd round).
For the Rams they signed a good one, but he is a 2nd rounder who got better by the year. In terms of what they Rams spent on him, he was a free agent, of course, and not a draft pick.
Kromer just does not spend high picks on linemen (though he has gone places that had high-picked linemen already on the roster like Eric Wood in Buffalo)…and it is fair to say he has always done well as an OL coach.
I don't know what that means for the future but it's interesting.
