I understand your position and think it's good to have it as part of the mix.
My own position is that I am just basically cautiously optimistic. I agree with you that a coach can look good before his first season but then there are some tests coming up that for all we know he will not pass. Not predicting it, just acknowledging that in the void of the unknown, which is where we are right now, we can't really write off that possibility yet.
But there are certainly things I like about McVay. To me, though, they don't always come across in interviews. I actually think that in interviews, he has a certain set of points he keeps repeating, which is fine...in fact, he does it well. I am just not wired though to take that as a sign of him being a good OR bad coach. I have nothing against it, and I am not complaining--I actually enjoy his interviews--but personally I just don't take them as indicative. That too is just one position among others.
On the other hand, he has made certain decisions, like in his hiring of coaches, that signal good things to me.
Time will sort all this out. I am cautiously optimistic at this point. That could lead to deeper optimism later when we see how things go.
