While I agree there can be an element of nostalgia I think more-so it's simply personal taste. What looks 'bland' to one may look elegant to another.
As I've mentioned... the Ram's did not wear B&W's when I first started following them... HOWEVER, they were in B&W's when they finally got 'good'... so there is that.
