It was probably true in the sense that any ok quality back could get 1000 yards.
In 1987 the year after Dickerson left Charles White copped 1374, I just looked it up. He led the NFL in rushing yards that year. Up to that point he had a series of 250-300 yard seasons. In fact he has 13678 yards rushing in his previous 6 years.
