I don't know what it was, but after a stellar rookie year and really good first half to 1994 his performance fell off dramatically and never recovered (as a Ram). He averaged 90 yards/game and 4.3 ypc his first 25 games as a Ram and less than 40 yards/game and 3.1 ypc his final 22. Brooks probably mishandled him and they certainly should have got more in the trade. But I also recall thinking Bettis looked really out of shape and unmotivated in 1995 in St. Louis. I was sitting right in front of him in the lower corner of Anaheim Stadium when he ran through the Steelers for his first NFL TD in '93. He was not nearly the same guy in 1995.
