On May 12, 1969, Los Angeles acquired all-Pro offensive tackle Bob "Boomer" Brown and defensive back Jim Nettles from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive back Irv Cross, offensive tackle Joe Carollo and guard Don Chuy. Cross, who was just 29 at the time but opted to become a player / coach with the Eagles, almost immediately began to rave to Philadelphia front office types about Harold Jackson, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound receiver out of Jackson State who'd spent his entire 1968 rookie season on the Rams' cab squad.
Just two months later, the Eagles shipped running back Israel Lang to Los Angeles for rookie defensive tackle John Zook and Jackson. Zook was soon shipped to Atlanta, but Jackson became an immediate starter and caught 65 passes for almost 1,200 yards with the Eagles.
In June 1973, Los Angeles traded quarterback Roman Gabriel to the Eagles for Jackson, running back "Touchdown" Tony Baker, a first-round draft choice in 1974 (which turned out to be Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti) and a first- and third-rounder in '75 (Dennis Harrah and Geoff Reece).
