I see what you're saying. I just lean toward bolstering 2017 as much as they can. McVay needs some immediate ROI. In 2018 they have all their draft picks and a lot of cap room so I'm less concerned about next year.
I like what they've done overall in free agency but think they need 2-3 immediate contributors from this draft class. And it's very good at positions they need (WR, TE, CB, DE). I predict there will be 2-4 players from those positions sitting there at #37 that are considered top 25-30 overall players in this draft. They need another passing game weapon to help Goff that can play from week 1. I think even moving back 10-12 picks from #37 lowers their odds quite a bit.
Hypothetically, let's say Baltimore offers them a trade to #47 and gives them their 4th (#122) and a 3rd in 2018. Hard decision but personally I wouldn't take it. If Atlanta offered #s 63 and 95 plus a 2018 2nd I might listen though.
I suspect you may be right on the 2-4 players sitting there with 1st round grades. However, given the strength of this draft, I also suspect those 2-4 players will be defensive players. IOW, probably not the passing game weapon that can help Goff starting week 1.
Right now it seems that many of those types of offensive players will be there with great value in the mid-2nd to 3rd round. I don’t think a trade back is going to lower their odds much on finding offensive talent for Goff.
Ideally a trade back would garner an extra day 2 pick, not another day 3 pick ala the Havenstein draft of 2015.
